These are good ideas. And I do have access to a sputter coater and a nickel plating solution. What I lack is permission from management to spend my time to pursue this further.
The TiN layer is two to four microns thick. Its characteristic gold color is readily visible at the higher magnifications in the metallograph. It contrasts well against the mount and metal.
