We wet grind to 600 grit on SiC papers. Then rough polish on a no knap cotton cloth using 6 micron diamond and a commercial extender as a lubricant. Then final polish on synthetic velvet using 1 micron diamond with DI water lubricant. Samples are prepared manually using wheels rotating at 400rpm.
It's strange that you have success etching fine silver. May I ask what the other 12% of the alloy composition is? Though I can't imagine it would make a difference. I assume the alloy has been sintered or extruded.
