We find that ammonium biflouride is a more obvious etch for alpha case, it shows up as a light etching layer. The composition that we use is known as Weck's reagent, and is the same as ASTM E407 Table 2 Etchant 217. Some of our customers use 18g per litre, which also works quite well, as a macro etch to show flow lines etc.

The standard micro etchant is:

5g ammonium biflouride
100ml water
