Methanol is not recommended as a solvent for etchants. it is poisonous, leading to blindness and other objectionable results. it is better to use denatured ethanol, preferably histological grade the contains only methanol and isopropyl alcohol as denaturants.
Conventional Nital of 5% conc. HNO3 in alcohol.
Consult ASTM Standard E-340 for more information on etchants.
